In what may be a sign that WWE are looking to utilize the pay-per-view name going forward again, WWE applied to trademark the “King of The Ring” as an event name on July 28th.

The company last utilized the concept in 2015, with qualifying matches taking place on RAW and a WWE Network exclusive airing the following night, which Bad News Barrett won.

The last time the event was used in a pay-per-view format and not a televised format was back in 2002.
