In an update on Vince McMahon’s self-funded Alpha Entertainment company announcing earlier this year of their intention in reviving the XFL in 2020 as an alternative to the National Football League, the XFL will be facing stiff competition prior to their launch, as Charlie Ebersol, the son of Dick Ebersol and director of the ESPN 30 For 30 documentary on the XFL announced today the formation of his own football league, the Alliance of American Football (AAF), which is planning to launch in February 2019, a year prior to the XFL’s planned launch.
As mentioned above, Charlie Ebersol is the son of Vince McMahon’s long-time confidante Dick Ebersol, the latter of who helped to forge the WWE’s relationship with NBC in the 1980’s and later helped to develop and co-own the XFL for its one season run on NBC.
AAF have announced that Dick Ebersol will serve on the League’s board of directors, meaning that the Ebersol family are now direct competition for the XFL, while the league also announced that the plan is for an 8 team league in their debut season and for games to be broadcast on CBS, one week after the 2019 Super Bowl concludes.
