Wrestling fans especially hardcore fans have been asking the same question for a long time. When will the spotlight be turned back onto tag- team wrestling? Well, the truth is that tag team wrestling is a main attraction in many promotions such as Ring of Honor (ROH) but not in the world’s top promotion (WWE) which obscures the picture a bit. After sorting through the top teams in the country I have assembled this top ten tag team ranking:

1- WWE Tag Team Champions AirBoom: Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne are very popular with the fans. These are two top singles competitors that reached a glass ceiling and joined forces to become WWE’s top team.

2- World’s Greatest Tag Team: Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin are not only two of the top names in Indie wrestling but also they bring legitimacy to tag- team wrestling and ROH that no other team could.

3- Ring of Honor Tag Team Champions The Briscoe Brothers: The best tag team in the company that features tag team wrestling the most. Ring of Honor tag team wrestling is greatly respected and very competitive Mark and Jay Briscoe are multi-time ROH champs that have a reputation for great matches.

4- The Young Bucks: One of the top independent teams in America. The Bucks, Matt and Nick Jackson instead of becoming lost in the singles X-Division shuffle made the decision to leave TNA for smaller promotions such as PWG and now ROH. WWE has also shown interest in them more than once and for a good reason.

5- TNA Tag Team Champions Crimson and Matt Morgan: They are on the list because they hold one of the top tag team titles. They are not much of a team as they operate much more like two singles stars that happen to be a team for their mutual success.

6- The Uso Brothers: Jimmy and Jay Uso are consistently featured on WWE television, that is a tall order for any tag team. The Uso’s are entertaining and very proficient in the ring.

7- Primo and Epico: A more recent addition to the WWE tag division. Primo and Epico have quickly established themselves as title contenders.

8- Mexican America: Hernandez and Anorquia are Former TNA Tag Champs. They are a less talented version of LAX but they are still one the most important pieces of the roster whether TNA recognizes it or not.

9- The All Night Express: Kenny King and Rhett Titus have more combined charisma thant most of the other teams on this list. Rhett Titus is on the injured list for the next few months and we all want to see the return of this team.

10- Motor City Machine Guns: Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley are two of the best X-Division wrestlers ever. Together they bring innovative offense to new heights. The Guns have been out of action for months now but their absence has been noticeable, their return should make a huge impact on iMPACT.

Honorable Mentions: Other tag teams that deserve recognition are: The Rock N.E.S Monsters, Future Shock, The British Invasion, The American Wolves, the idea of a consistent partnership between Eric Young and ODB, and Pin-Up Strong: Natalya Neidhart and Beth Phoenix.

There are some partnerships that unfortunately ended and have shaken up the tag team picture.

The Kings of Wrestling: Claudio Castignoli and Chris Hero. The Kings were excellent on ROH and across the country. Unfortunately for Kings fans Castignoli has been signed to a WWE developmental deal and is now wrestling under the name Antonio Cesaro, for a brief time there were rumors that Hero was set to join him but as of this time he has returned to ROH.

Awesome Truth: This was a marriage made in a crazy and egomaniacal heaven. Awesome Truth is an amazingly well-rounded but short-lived team that produced some of the hottest heat and best promos of the year. Unfortunately a horribly timed wellness policy suspension took R-Truth out of the program and WWE scrambled to write him off TV thus ending his partnerships with The Miz.

Beer Money: Another amazing team that split this year as TNA needed new blood in the main event picture and both Roode and Storm fit into the title picture as they are both exceptional performers together or apart. Roode got the heat that he needed for his heel title run by turning on the extremely likeable James Storm.

In summation, there is not a shortage of excellent tag teams just a lack of focus on them. WWE has been lacking in desire to push the tag division for years now.TNA/iMPACT after doing an adequate job for years has lost dedication to their tag team picture. It seems that the Indies get the trickle down of the ROH teams as they travel city by city wrestling every territory’s best and brightest. ROH is the best place for featuring tag teams and they have a stacked roster of tag talent that rivals any promotion in the history of U.S. wrestling. WWE could take some hints from the likes of ROH and improve their tag team division by taking two lower-card or mid-card wrestlers and packaging them together as a team.

A good example of making a tandem work is the team of Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler as they work very well together. An example that proves you cannot just force two guys together is the brief and horrifyingly awkward team of Bryan Kendrick and Ezekiel Jackson. The key here is to make good combinations that are invested in the tag team instead of taking two guys that have nothing in common and no chemistry and forcing them together out of desperation.
