After this past weekend’s episode of “Ring of Honor Wrestling” TV (available here for Ringside Members), it can now be announced that the ROH World Title Match for “Showdown in the Sun- Day 1” has been set and it is a meeting of three men quite familiar with one another.
Roderick Strong & Eddie Edwards met to see which of the two former World Champions would meet ROH World Champion Davey Richards in Ft. Lauderdale on March 30th and challenge for the title. What it came down to was the involvement of Truth Martini, Michael Elgin, and Adam Cole providing a distraction for Roderick to load up his boot with something and nailing Edwards with the Sick Kick to score the victory & the title shot.
ROH official Paul Turner immediately hit the ring to inform Senior Referee Todd Sinclair of what Strong did behind his back, allowing Edwards to nail Roderick, accidentally leveling Sinclair in the process, but leaving Turner there to now make the count for Edwards and awarding him the title match. All of this confusion brought out Jim Cornette who declared that on March 30th at The War Memorial Auditorium it would be a Triple Threat Match with Davey Richards defending his ROH World Title against BOTH Roderick Strong & Eddie Edwards in an Elimination Match!
“It’s garbage man.” said Strong, “The whole world saw me beat Eddie on TV so the fact that he’s getting in my title match is ridiculous. I beat him on TV, I beat him in the No DQ match, and he’s still getting in my title match. I know what’s going to happen, those two, since neither of them can beat me on their own, are going to pull all their little American Wolf crap on me, try their best to block me out, eliminate me first, and keep the best man from winning. Between this and making me, a former World AND Tag champion, making me fight Proving Ground matches, sometimes I think ROH just doesn’t want me to be a champion again. But we’re going go my home state for this one, Showdown in Roderick’s Sun we should call it, so if you guys think all your little Wolf crap will stop me from winning back my belt, you’re dead wrong. That’s your truth right there!”
The history between these three men is rich; from the days of The No Remorse Corps with Roderick & Davey to The American Wolves with Eddie & Davey; from “Final Battle 2010” when Roderick retained the World Title against Davey to “Manhattan Mayhem IV” when Eddie took the title from Roderick to “Best in the World 2011” when Davey then bested Edwards, their careers have been married to one another for some time and at “Showdown in the Sun – Day 1” it all comes to a head in this Triple Threat Elimination battle.
