New NWA World Heavyweight Champion crowned in San Antonio
On March 16 at the Woodlawn Gym in San Antonio Texas, “Ironman” Rob Conway pinned Tokyo Monster Kahagas to become the new NWA World Heavyweight Champion. This match took place at “The Monster’s Ball” which was presented by NWA Branded Outlaw Wrestling. Conway’s victory marks the first time in history that the most storied and recognized title in all of professional wrestling has changed hands in San Antonio.
Earlier in the evening, Conway, the acting General Manager of NWA BOW, had awarded the title match to NWA BOW and NWA Lone Star Heavyweight Champion “Vanilla Godzilla” Jax Dane. Dane was later assaulted by the NWA World Tag Team Champions “The Kingz of the Underground” Scot Summers and Ryan Genesis, along with Ricky Starks, A.J. Summers and Dick Dallas. Dane had to be taken to the hospital for medical attention after suffering a vicious beating which included several chair shots to the ankle. Before leaving the building, Dane pleaded with Conway to take his place in the title match against Kahagas.
Conway accepted Dane’s offer and NWA President Bruce Tharpe sanctioned the match. A visibly injured Dane, only able to get around on one leg, returned from the hospital in time to witness Conway’s victory. An emotional Conway recognized Dane as a “fine wrestler”, “a hell of a man” and his “best friend” during an in ring victory celebration. Conway also paid tribute to his late father who passed away six months prior. “I want to dedicate this to my dad. I love you, I miss you…this is for you…champion of the world!”
