The luchador currently known as Myzteziz in AAA and formerly known as Mistico in CMLL & as Sin Cara in WWE made a surprise appearance at Friday’s CMLL Arena Mexico show. Prior to the start of CMLL’s Universal tournament, he walked down the entrance ramp and into the ring (with different music playing as opposed to his more known “Ameno” entrance song) and re-introduced himself to the Arena Mexico fans. He had a slightly different looking mask, but it was very apparent that the first Mistico in CMLL had made his return to Arena Mexico.
Thursday afternoon, MedioTiempo’s Apolo Valdes tweeted out that Lucha Libre Elite would have an “important announcement” on Friday at the conclusion of CMLL’s show in Arena Mexico. He mentioned they would be announcing an ex-WWE wrestler as part of their upcoming 10/25 show in the same building. At the time most just assumed it would be an ex-WWE wrestler that was coming in from the US or outside of Mexico at least.
By late Friday afternoon, Apolo tweeted out that he was told that the ex-WWE wrestler that would be announced should the deal go through would would surprise everyone. About a half hour before the start of Friday’s show, Dave Meltzer on the Wrestling Observer web site posted an update that Mistico/Myzteziz was at Arena Mexico. While AAA was silent due to the building they ran their show at having internet issues, there was a tweet by Dorian Roldan referencing there always being a “Judas”. He later took that tweet down, but that most likely was in reference to this situation.
Mistico/Myzteziz mentioned during his in-ring promo that he was honored and glad to be back home. He also mentioned he returned to get his spot back in Arena Mexico. Fans chanted “Mistico” to him. Mistico/Myzteziz thanked the fans and before leaving, kissed the ring. CMLL ring announcer Ivan mentioned him as “este luchador” when letting fans know he would be on the Lucha Libre Elite show on 10/25.
Mistico/Myzteziz mentioned that he would fulfill his remaining dates with AAA and then remaining dates with AAA and then leave the promotion. His objective is a return to CMLL, but at the moment he is only confirming that he’d be wrestling on the Lucha Libre Elite show on 10/25 in Arena Mexico. He also mentioned that he would be changing his name and image yet again.
This is somewhat similar to how L.A. Park & Dr. Wagner Jr. made their brief returns to CMLL as they made appearances at Arena Mexico to promote Lucha Libre Elite (at the time known as ALL ELITE) show they would be wrestling on and then later working out deals to return to CMLL. Granted that didn’t last very long and its possible this could end in a similar fashion as well, but there aren’t many big draws in Mexico and CMLL did experience attendance increases those 2 weeks that L.A. Park & Dr. Wagner Jr. returned, so trying it with Myzteziz/Mistico could at least give them a similar attendance spike.
The story should get even more interesting based on how AAA reacts to Myzteziz/Mistico’s decision to leave the promotion. He’s publicly stated he’d honor his final dates with the promotion, but this changes plans for them. The death of Perro Aguayo Jr. left a big hole at the top in the rudo side and when Myzteziz turned on Rey Mysterio at Triplemania it appeared they’d have filled that role. They then turned Myzteziz into more of a tweener when La Sociedad decided to turn on him at Heroes Inmortales, so they took a step back with that, but they still had Myzteziz as a draw and now don’t. It should be noted that a few days prior to Triplemania in early August, Alberto El Patron had threatened Myzteziz/Mistico on twitter, but there was never any mention from Myzteziz at that time on that problem and neither one of them has since brought it up. Myzteziz didn’t mention that as a reason for leaving AAA.
As far as what this means for CMLL, honestly I don’t know. We just went through the strange 2-week run featuring Dr. Wagner Jr. & L.A. Park that increased attendance and ended abruptly. It was rather amusing to see the first wrestler introduced for the CMLL Universal tournament immediately after Myzteziz/Mistico’s in-ring promo was none other than Mistico II and then in the battle royal everyone including his trio’s partner Volador Jr. attacking him. Mistico II’s match against his other trios partner Valiente also appeared to indicate a possible break-up of the current Sky Team. The announcers even pointed it out. They didn’t mention the other Mistico on commentary.
At the moment, all we know is that Myzteziz/Mistico appearing on the Lucha Libre Elite show on 10/25 will mean a stronger draw at the gate for that show and also the first step in CMLL’s first Mistico returning home.
