If you watched CMLL in the early 80’s or have watched it online or on video you will probably remember one of the main announcers was Pedro “El Mago” Septien who passed away this week at the age of 97. Septien’s main claim to fame was being Televisa’s baseball announcer for decades but he started broadcasting lucha libre in 1980 and didn’t really have any familiarity with the sport at the time but studied heavily and became one of the best announcers in the sport’s history. He wasn’t the best technical announcer but he brought an excitement that few other have since then. Dr. Alfonso Morales who is the definitive voice of lucha libre said that El Mago was a huge influence on his career and his research on all the main stars in the sport was almost unparalled. Dr. Morales also said that El Mago was the one that came up with the the motto “La Mejor Lucha del Mundo” which is still used as a slogan by CMLL today. QEPD.
Manuel Balderas Martinez who was mainly known for playing Coco Blanco in IWRG and the indies for the past decade plus passed away on Wednesday at the age of 45. Martinez worked for over 27 years and last worked a show at Arena Neza last month. Descanse en Paz.
Mistico II reinjured his left shoulder on Tuesday night in Guadalajara during the 3rd fall and couldn’t continue his match. The shoulder has been nagging him recently after injuring it originally months ago then came back way too quick before it fully recovered. There is no timetable on when he will come back but more often than not I suspect he will keep performing.
