WWE Hall of Famer Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka took to the stand yesterday as the hearings began into whether he was mentally competent to stand trial on the charges of involuntary manslaughter and third-degree murder in the 1983 death of his then girlfriend Nancy Argentino in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
According to a report from The Allentown Morning Call, Snuka was on the stand for a little over an hour and was questioned by the presiding Judge in the case, Kelly L. Banach and that during the questioning, Snuka was not aware that this was an election year and could not name politicians or sports personalities, although he admitted that he regularly watched the news. Snuka also stated that he did not know who would sit in the Jurors’ box during a trial, responding that it would be the Judges and referred to Judge Banach as “sister” and “hon”. Snuka also talked professional wrestling and agreed with the Judge that “The Stone” was the nickname for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Snuka said that promoters determine who wins and loses in professional wrestling, but to him, wrestling was real and stated that the injuries were real and that he often kept them to himself and never complained about the injuries, because the next time, it might be his turn to kick his opponent. Snuka was then asked about Argentino and said that she was a friend that he had met at wrestling matches. He was then asked about his own attorney to which he said that he felt like he was doing a good job. Judge Banach asked if he would do whatever the attorney told him, including jumping off a building, to which Snuka responded that he has already done that, which made the courtroom laugh.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia ABC affiliate reported that Snuka was unable to remember the name of his own mother when he was asked and that Snuka was confused about his given name and age, despite turning 73 this past Wednesday, while The Morning Call noted that members of Snuka’s family were said to have been in tears when he was being questioned.
For those unfamiliar with the story, Snuka’s then girlfriend at the time, Nancy Argentino, had ben on the road travelling with Snuka at the time of her death. Snuka had wrestled for the World Wrestling Federation on May 10th, 1983 at a television taping at the Allentown Fairgrounds and when he got back to his hotel room, stated that he found Argentino gasping for air and oozing yellow fluid from her nose and mouth. Argentino passed away on May 11th, 1983 with her autopsy stating that her cause of death was due to traumatic brain injuries and that Argentino also had a number of cuts and bruises on her body, which may have been the cause of domestic abuse. Several weeks prior to her passing, there had been an incident in New York State where police were called due to an argument between Snuka and Argentino in a hotel. The report from the medical examiner at the time stated that Argentino’s injuries were consistent with being hit with a stationary object, while the forensic pathologist suggested that the case be invested as a homicide, however no one was ever charged and the case went cold, with Snuka denying that he ever killed Argentino to this day. Years after the case remained cold and the files were re-opened, Snuka was charged in 2015 with involuntary manslaughter and third-degree murder, with the lost autopsy report from the medical examiner at the time being discovered by the Allentown Morning Call as they covered the 30th anniversary of the passing of Argentino, as well as Snuka’s autobiography from 2012 giving a different version of the circumstances leading to her passing, in comparison to what Snuka had told authorities at the time leading to him being indicted.
Back in 1983, Snuka claimed that there was horseplay that led to Argentino getting hurt and that he was not aware of the seriousness of the situation until he called for medical help after working the WWF television taping at the time, while in his 2012 autobiography Superfly, claimed that the two of them stopped so that Argentino could go to the bathroom on the side of a road, however she slipped and hit her head on a rock. Snuka stated that he put her to bed and checked on her after wrestling for the WWF, returned for another set of television tapings and when he returned after the WWF had completed the tapings, realized the seriousness of the situation and called for an ambulance.
There was no ruling on Snuka’s competency with another hearing scheduled for June 21st.
