Former WWE Tag Team Champions Edge & Christian were the latest guest on the Stone Cold Podcast on the WWE Network. The show opened out with Austin saying that he always called Edge either Adam or Edge, but on the flipside of things, he has always called Christian, well Christian and not by his first name of Jay and asked what’s the protocol. Christian said that he can call him Jay, Christian or Captain. Austin said that the three of them were last together at WrestleMania 28 and said that at WrestleMania 30, himself and Christian got drunk and did not remember a thing the day after.
Austin said that Edge and Christian went from rockstars to responsible human beings and fathers. Edge said that they have daughters 6 weeks apart and recounted the story how he told Christian that they’re expecting a baby and after a long silence, Christian said that they’re expecting a baby too. Edge said that they didn’t plan on getting their wives pregnant at the same time and said that he now lives in Asheville, North Carolina, while Christian lives in Tampa, Florida. Christian said that adjusting to normal life after getting out of the business and that it was a bit of a culture shock not having the same routine and didn’t know what to do with himself for most of the time. Edge said that he was ready to hang up the boots and retired at the age of 37 and said that he still had a year left on his deal when he retired and was planning on leaving anyway, but it came faster than expected and that the Haven producers saw his retirement speech and got him the gig on the show and he flew to Halifax for one episode, which turned into forty episodes.
Austin said that he had a serious question for them and got out two kazoos and asked them to play his theme song. All three of them laughed, however Christian reached under the desk and pulled out a cowboy hat and guitar and told Austin that they would do it as long as he would sing Kumbaya for them like he did for Vince McMahon several years ago. Edge and Christian started playing Austin’s theme with the kazoos, followed up by Austin singing Kumbaya. Austin talked about tag teams and The Dudley Boyz returning and said that they went where they went, but this is home. Edge said that The New Day is on fire and enjoys watching tag team wrestling when done right and that he is excited again for the WWE tag team division. Austin then talked about the don’t look at me game that the three of them used to pull on each other and recounted how once during an episode of WWE RAW when Edge and Christian were tying him to The Undertaker’s cross, Christian told Austin don’t look at me and Austin flipped for getting him during one of the most important segments on the show.
Both Edge and Christian said that when growing up, their favorite wrestler was Hulk Hogan. Austin then turned things into a little “newlyweds” game and asked Christian what is Edge’s favorite arena to wrestle in. Christian said it is the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago, to which Edge said is correct and that it was Christian’s favorite one too. Austin then asked Edge what Christian’s favorite match was and he guessed that it was the Christian vs. Randy Orton match, however Christian said that his favorite match was against Alberto Del Rio during his World Title run. Edge said that his favorite was against The Undertaker at WrestleMania. The discussion then turned to the most embarassing moment of their wrestling career. Edge said that he took a bulldog from the top rope and almost “bacon-stripped” his white tights on pay-per-view. Christian said that his came during the Invasion pay-per-view where he was supposed to jump off Edge’s back and over the top rope and onto two guys, but slipped because of the sweat on Edge’s back and completely missed his landing. Austin then showed some video footage from TLC matches. Edge said that at WrestleMania 16, they had a blank canvas and no restraints. Christian then talked about the process of building a TLC match rather than having a car crash. Edge said that TLC matches are always like tornadoes in a trailer park. Christian said that they were always willing to take the risk for the reward as the TLC matches put them on the map and catapulted them, often stealing the show. Austin mentioned Bubba Ray, Devon, Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy as the perfect opponents for them. Christian said that the next day after TLC matches, it was awful as they were very sore.
Austin then asked about the Sexton Hardcastle gimmick that Edge originally had and when he told him to describe who he was at the time, Edge said that he had no idea and that was the hardest part of the gimmick. Edge said that originally, the character was pitched to recite poetry wearing leather pants and a shirt and that Gangrel came along and it was the best thing for them as part of the Brood. Austin said that it was good to have them back here and asked if they miss it. Edge said that he doesn’t yearn for it, but it’s good in bursts and it’s always nice to go home to the baby.
Edge said that they are the only Tag Team Champions to have become World Champion and was surprised when he got the call for the WWE Hall of Fame as it was just a year after he retired, but he was not going to turn it down and said that he got calls from Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels who both said that he deserved it. Austin asked Christian if he feels like he should be in the WWE Hall of Fame as well and he said that he would like to think so, but that is not his call. Austin and Edge said that they think he should be in the WWE Hall of Fame. The trio then started talking about Michael P.S. Hayes who Edge and Christian said was very instrumental in their tag team careers. Edge said that he thinks Hayes saw a little “Freebirds” in them. Edge and Christian put over Hayes as someone who helped them a lot and listened to anything that they pitched and said that this is another guy who should be in the WWE Hall of Fame.
Austin then talked about the wrestlers court, something that both Edge and Christian had to go through at one point. It was noted that there were rumors that both of them had dinner at a head writer’s house, which came out looking at them being brown-nosers. It was noted that the wrestlers court occurs backstage when someone breaks etiquette and charges are brought against the offenders and that The Undertaker is the judge and JBL acted as the prosecutor. Edge said that they both had a good defense story and went in and told everyone they had a book deal, leaving everyone watching the spectacle with their mouths open and then they took out a mock cover of the book titled, Edge and Christian: A** kissing our road to the top. They said that the good thing about wrestlers court is that the judge could be bought and the two went out and bought Taker a bunch of stuff as their settlement and when he saw the times, he told both of them that there is not going to be a blemish on their records.
Edge then talked about the call he got from Vince McMahon telling him that his career was done and said that he didn’t know it was bad to that extent and Vince told him that it was one of the most difficult calls he had to make. Edge said that he felt sorry for himself for a bit, but then again, a big weight was lifted off his shoulder. Edge said that Vince wanted to make sure that he heard the news from him, rather than anyone else. Christian said that the biggest impact Vince left on him was his dedication to the company and the fact that this is his life and he does not get much sleep and said that Vince’s work ethic is infectious and that he had no clue what he was going to do when he went into singles competition, but Vince was there to pump him up and give him support. They then talked about their exit strategy from the business. Edge said that he didn’t have any, but then Haven came along. Austin said that Christian went to make a cameo on Haven, the show that Edge had a part on and the show got cancelled. Christian then went on to discuss how the What? chant started. Austin left a voice message to Christian as he had no reception where he was and there was a bunch of What? after every sentence and he then was backstage once and he heard Austin saying it during an in-ring promo and the rest is history.
Austin asked them if they had any regrets. Edge said that he has no regrets at all and he has nothing to complain about. Christian said that his only regret was participating in this podcast, which had all men laughing, but said that like Edge, he has no regrets about his wrestling career. Edge said that he just wants to be remembered and if fans put him and Christian in the same category as The Hart Foundation, The British Bulldogs, etc, then it’s mission accomplished. Christian said that no matter how many people were in the stands, they gave it their all and said that he wants to be remembered as being a better wrestler than Edge. Austin then asked them to join him for a five second pose as the show wrapped up.
