Pro-Wrestling Powerhouse Radio’s “Wrestling’s Rope Break” – in association with Main Event Madness – aired this Wednesday (26th November) with host Joel O’Brien sitting down with AWA/WCW/WWE alumni and former three-time WCW World Champion DIAMOND DALLAS PAGE.
Highlights of the interview are below:
ON HIS TIME IN WWE: “There was a lot of tension coming into (WWE). But that’s how Vince McMahon rallied the troops: the evil Eric Bischoff was trying to put them out of business. When it came to the DDP character, he didn’t have a grasp on it, and didn’t really care that he didn’t. Vince is very much into the character that he creates. I created DDP myself and they wanted to change that, which didn’t work. In retrospect, I would have done things differently, but that’s the lessons that you learn through business. The best thing that ever happened to me was the worst thing that ever happened to me in WWE. What I mean by that is, I didn’t walk away from the table and that’s what I should have done: “this is a great idea…but not for me”.
ON WHAT HE WANTS TO SEE FROM PRO-WRESTLING IN 6 MONTHS TIME: “I’d like to see them go back to letting the talent talk on their own more, but I don’t think it will ever happen. A lot of promos these days are completely scripted. The hardest thing these poor guys have to do is learn a paragraph, or 2, or 3 of lines literally hours before they have to go out there. For an actor to get lines for a monologue, they usually are studying them days ahead of time. I would love to see guys start to create their own stuff like we had to because that’s when your real personality starts to come out. A lot of the things that I said back in those days were coming directly from me, pretty much everything actually. I think that would help some guys really get over.
ON THE ORIGINS OF DDP YOGA: “For the first 42 years of my life, I was a guy that wouldn’t be caught dead doing yoga. But, when my career took off insanely in 1996, 1997, 1998, I blew my back out and I was on top of the world at the time. I was doing main event after main event, I just signed a multi-million dollar 3-year deal and they told me my career was over. Around that time, I was still married to Kimberly and she was like “you should use yoga to heal your body” and I was like “YOGA!? I aint doing yoga!!” After her busting my chops for a while, I finally did it and I’m so glad I did. Within three weeks, I felt a significant difference to my strength and flexibility. Bottom line is, I combined yoga with old school calisthenics, with rehabilitation techniques, with dynamic resistance, and within three weeks, I was back in the ring. Even though the top back specialists told me my career was over, at 33, I was the heavyweight champion of the world. Ever since then, it’s become part of my lifestyle.
Page also discusses who he has his eye on in current WWE, whether or not DDP Yoga will make it into WWE’s performance centre as a normative training routine, favourite matches in his career, his opinion on John Cena plus SO MUCH MORE!
