WWE legend and stand-up comedian Mick Foley was on Sky Sports News today with hosts Jim White and Natalie Sawyer to help promote the WWE WrestleMania 28 pay-per-view event, as well as his stand up comedy tour.
Jim White noted that Foley performed in his hometown of Glasgow, Scotland last night and that he will be doing 2 shows tonight and tomorrow in Leicester Square Theatre, followed by shows in Cardiff, Birmingham, Belfast, Dublin, Sheffield and Liverpool. Foley was asked if the comedy shows are wrestling related, to which he noted that some of it is, like when he tackles the issues and solves the problem of international terrorism as one example, he does it with the knowledge he has learned as a wrestler and said that United States President, Barack Obama, would be much better off if he had a professional wrestler as part of his staff. Foley said that jokes like that went down well with the Glasgow audience last night and he welcomes the fact that he can come here and noted that people in the UK are more interested in American politics than some Americans are.
Foley was then asked how he got into the wrestling business and noted that he was a huge fan and went to WrestleMania 3 at Madison Square Garden where he saw “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka leaping from a steel cage and remembers vividly thinking that he wanted to be like Snuka and then showcased a video of Foley applying a mandible claw on David Otunga, which he described the finisher in detail.
Foley was then asked about what he is doing at WrestleMania 28, to which he stopped for a second and said that he didn’t know yet if he has a match or not and then went on to promote The Undertaker vs. Triple H at WrestleMania 28 inside Hell in a Cell and how he has lost to both men inside the Hell in a Cell during his career and stated that he would like to be the special guest referee of the match, however stated that he would be part of the WrestleMania Fan Axxess events, so people can still see him in person at Mania. Foley then requested if he could speak about his WrestleMania 28 raffle for RAINN, who he works for as an online volunteer on a weekly basis available at RealMickFoley.com/Mania and RealMickFoley.com.
They then turned to a Q & A session from the fans, with one fan sending in a question that Foley has made 20 or so comebacks and can’t give the wrestling business up, to which Foley stated that he feels like Don Corleone and that they drag him back in, stating that he only officially retired once in 2000 and that you can never say never, while promoting the 2012 Royal Rumble match and how the fans enjoyed his appearances. Foley was asked that if he could have one more WrestleMania match, he would face off against someone like Dolph Ziggler, Cody Rhodes, The Miz or Wade Barrett, who unfortunately is now injured. Jim then poked fun at The Miz commenting on his recent appearance in studio when Miz applied a Skull Crushing Finale on him, with Jim noting that he faked all the hurt from The Miz on the day, which made Foley laugh. Foley then commented on writing his first children’s book for years tentatively titled A Most Mizerable Christmas and how The Miz is a horrible kid who wants far too much.
Foley was then asked if British Wrestlers have improved since the likes of British Bulldog, to which he noted that Bulldog was an incredible wrestler and brought up The British Bulldogs tag team with Dynamite Kid and British Bulldog and that he could not chew solid food after facing them for 3 weeks and that American fans have always responded well to British wrestlers in the business, with Jim then commenting on how “Rowdy” Roddy Piper was a big star, before referencing Drew McIntyre as “Big Drew” with Foley commenting on how he was a referee for a show in Glasgow, Scotland 8 years ago and Drew was just a youngster, with Foley commenting on how he met Sheamus 5 years ago, way prior to him signing a deal with the WWE and that fans should attend the smaller shows as the UK scene has some great talented wrestlers that may end up in the company someday. On his toughest competitor in the business and the best match he has ever had in his career, Foley noted that the best match he’s had is against Randy Orton at Backlash in 2004 and that his toughest competitor is either Terry Funk, Stone Cold, Triple H, The Rock or The Undertaker as people can tell if they go back on his career in Japan or the WWE. Foley was then asked if he ever washes Mr. Socko, to which he laughed about and noted that he used to use the same sock every night and there was a time he was the least popular guy over that and shared a funny story about how his accountant wondered how he wrote off $2,700 on socks.
Foley was asked why fans boo John Cena, to which he noted that he doesn’t know either and commented on a tweet he sent out one night after RAW that said it’s about time that people appreciated John Cena’s great legacy of matches and how John has an avid fanbase that loves him and an avid fanbase who hates him, but no one is in the middle.
The interview then came to a close due to time constraints with Jim White plugging WrestleMania 28 on April 1st to close out the interview.
