All Elite Wrestling superstar Jon Moxley (fka Dean Ambrose in WWE) was a recent guest on Chris Jericho’s Talk is Jericho podcast and opened up on when he decided that it was time for him to leave the WWE.
Moxley said that he actually made the decision to let his contract expire back in July 2018 and that he was sat at home rehabbing his triceps injury, watching wrestling from around the world, which reinvigorated him, however, Moxley noted that with creative ideas flowing, he came to the conclusion that he would never be allowed to execute any of them in the WWE, due to how the creative process works in the company.
Moxley revealed that he flew to New York to meet with WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon to discuss his comeback and that he told Vince that he hated his own character and wanted to start fresh as a heel, however Vince would not allow that, as a Shield reunion was already booked for WWE’s Super Showdown event in Australia. Moxley revealed that he asked to be allowed to return at WWE SummerSlam as a surprise, but the company moved up that process and brought him back a week earlier on Monday Night RAW.
Moxley said that he effectively sat out the remainder of his contract, as he told the WWE on the day of the 2019 Royal Rumble pay-per-view that he was not going to re-sign and that no amount of money would make him change his mind.
