Following the announcements over the past few months on WWE’s official website that the company had suspended Darren Young, Heath Slater, Evan Bourne and most recently R-Truth for 30 days for failing the WWE Wellness Policy testing, without disclosing further information, all 4 individuals failed testing for the usage of synthetic marijuana, basically K2 or Spice and were suspended instead of a usual $2,500 fine.
In speaking to several sources, WWE are clamping down heavily on synthetic drug usage and the usage of marijuana now results in a suspension instead of a $2,500 fine in a change to the company’s policy. One of WWE’s main concerns is that the usage of synthetic marijuana is becoming more frequent in everyday life, especially as the US Navy announced this past Monday that it plans to kick out 28 sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan for using synthetic marijuana.
WWE is also worried that the usage of synthetic marijuana is causing more deaths, most notably a 13-year old boy from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania who became ill after smoking synthetic marijuana, had a double lung transplant and lost his life. The boy in question smoked the synthetic marijuana out of a plastic PEZ candy dispenser and the chemicals that were in the drug caused extensive damage to his lungs and was put on a respirator in June and had a double lung transplant in September. Upon learning of the boy’s condition during the summer, The Governer of Pennsylvania, Tim Corbett, signed a new law stating that the synthetic substance was to be outlawed in Pennsylvania, which came into effect in August.
WWE will be conducting heavy testing at January’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view, as they do not want any superstars who get suspended to hamper any WWE WrestleMania 28 plans, which the company will be promoting heavily in 2012.
