Alpha Entertainment’s revival of the XFL franchise could feature an Orlando-based football team, as WWE’s Senior Vice President of Special Events John Saboor recently contacted Orlando’s executive director of venues about the prospect of putting a team together that would play at the Camping World Stadium (aka the former Citrus Bowl and site of WrestleMania 33), according to a report from the Orlando Sentinel, who note that the XFL’s attempts at pursuing an Orlando-based team could prove difficult as Charlie Ebersol’s Alliance of American Football, which will launch next year, one year prior to the XFL relaunch, have already announced that they will have a team located in Orlando.
WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, whose self-funded Alpha Entertainment company will be bringing back the XFL name, noted in the past that WWE and XFL would be separate entities, with no WWE staffer working for XFL, however given that the XFL will not launch until 2020, one could assume that Saboor is on board to get teams interested until XFL get the teams and locations in place with XFL staff to take over his role.
The report notes that XFL are confident that their Orlando-based team, as well as an Alliance of American Football team can co-exist in the area.
