There have been strong rumors over the past 24-48 hours that the XFL, the failed football league venture between WWE and NBC that lasted for one season, could be rebooted at some point in 2018.
In a statement released to David Bixenspan of Deadspin, WWE did not confirm or deny the rumors and had the following to say on the matter, noting that WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon is funding a separate entity from WWE titled Alpha Entertainment.
“Vince McMahon has established and is personally funding a separate entity from WWE, Alpha Entertainment, to explore investment opportunities across the sports and entertainment landscapes, including professional football. Mr. McMahon has nothing further to announce at this time.”
WWE filed for two new XFL trademarks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) earlier this year. On January 4th, the company made a filing for clothing and apparel, while the second one on June 28th was for entertainment services. Both applications were filed by Lauren A. Dienes-Middlen, who is the company’s Senior Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of Intellectual Property.
